PDF metadata
Short answer: PDF metadata is information about the file itself: title, author, subject, keywords, creating software, creation and modification dates and so on. It is stored in the file, is normally not visible, and can leak information when the file is shared.
Where it is stored
- Document information dictionary: title, author, subject, keywords, creator, producer, dates.
- XMP metadata: in XML format, and may include a more detailed editing history.
- Image EXIF / XMP: in photos, the device, time and location.
How to view it
Open “Document properties” in your PDF reader. For a fuller list, use a tool such as ExifTool.
How to remove it
PDF Text Replacer secure redaction rewrites the whole file, removes the document information, XMP, and EXIF and XMP in images, and checks the result after saving. See Remove PDF metadata and hidden information.
