An alternative to online PDF editors without uploading
Short answer: Online PDF editors work as soon as you open the page, but your file has to be uploaded to the provider first. If your scans contain personal data or are covered by confidentiality terms, EnjoyPDF does the same kind of text correction and redaction on your computer, and documents are not uploaded.
Smallpdf, iLovePDF, Sejda and PDF24 are trademarks of their respective owners. This site is not affiliated with them. The comparison is based on the public sources below and their access dates.
Strengths of online editors
- No installation; they work in a browser on any system;
- Many kinds of tools: merge, split, compress, convert;
- The easiest option when you handle one or two files once in a while.
When to switch to an offline tool
- The file contains ID numbers, bank card numbers, medical records or salaries;
- A customer contract or company policy forbids uploading to third parties;
- You need to process dozens or hundreds of scans in batch;
- You need to show whether each change is correct (read-back verification and operation record).
Tasks PDF Text Replacer covers
| Task | Common approach in online editors | PDF Text Replacer |
|---|---|---|
| Changing text on a scan | Cover with a white or colored box and type new text, or run OCR first | Erases only the strokes and draws new text to match the original ink |
| Replacing many terms at once | Most do one at a time | Keyword table, dozens of entries in one pass |
| Hiding sensitive data | A redaction tool, often a paid feature | Finds ID numbers by check digit, deletes and rewrites the file, checks residue automatically |
| Where the file goes | Uploaded to a server | Your computer |
Tasks it does not cover
Merging, splitting, compressing, format conversion and e-signatures are not PDF Text Replacer features. Keep using the tools you know for those.
FAQ
Do these online tools have desktop versions?
Some do. For example, Sejda and PDF24 both offer desktop versions. If you already use their desktop versions, refer to each vendor's own statements about how files are processed.
Does EnjoyPDF have a web version?
No, and there are no plans for an upload-based web version. The free tools on this site all run locally in your browser and do not receive files.
