SHA-256
Short answer: SHA-256 is a hash algorithm that computes a 64-character "fingerprint" for a file. The same file always gives the same value, and changing a single byte gives a completely different one, so it can be used to check whether a file has been changed.
How this software uses it
- Download checks: the download page and the changelog publish the SHA-256 of every installer.
- Language packs: SHA-256 is checked when a language pack is downloaded or imported; a pack that does not match is not installed.
- Operation record: manifest.json records the SHA-256 of the original and output files, so you can confirm that a delivered file is the output produced at that time.
- Recognition cache: recognition results are cached by a hash of the file content and become invalid automatically when the content changes.
How to compute it
Windows PowerShell:
Get-FileHash .\file.pdf -Algorithm SHA256
Or use the SHA-256 file checker on this site, which computes the value locally in your browser.
