Troubleshooting

Short answer: Most problems come from the wrong recognition language, keywords written differently from the source, missing glyphs in a font, or low scan resolution. Causes and fixes are listed below by symptom.

Last updated: Checked against version: EnjoyPDF 2.0

Keyword not found

  • Recognition language: make sure “Recognition language” is set to “Auto” or matches the script of the keyword.
  • Spelling differences: text-layer matching is case-sensitive and distinguishes full-width from half-width characters. Image-text matching ignores spaces and treats full-width letters and digits as half-width, but is still case-sensitive. You can turn on “Loose matching”.
  • Variant characters: variant forms in Traditional Chinese and Japanese (such as 橫/横 or 暦/曆) are not matched. Type the keyword as it appears in the file.
  • Across lines: only single-line text is supported. Split a term that runs across lines into two entries.
  • Resolution: scans below about 150 DPI have a low recognition rate.
  • The summary lists the keywords that were not found. You can copy them out and check them one by one.

Missing glyphs

When the font subset embedded in a text-layer PDF lacks the new characters, the software first looks for the full font with the same name on your computer, then for the closest local font in the same script and style, and notes this in the saved result. If neither is found, an error is shown, and the dialog offers a one-click switch to automatic font selection.

Text too small after replacement

If “When image text is too long” is set to “Stay within the original area” and the replacement is much longer than the original, the text becomes noticeably smaller. Switch to “Compress” or “Allow overflow”, and check with “Preview replacement”.

Slow recognition

  • When you open a file, scanned pages start being recognized in the background right away, while you are still entering keywords.
  • Recognition results are cached on your computer, so searching the same file again finishes immediately.
  • “Fast recognition” reads with the small model only. Searching is faster, but blurry or low-resolution scans may be misread.

File in use or wrong password

Close the same file in any other program and try again. Passwords are used only in memory for the current operation and are not stored in settings or logs.

PDFs with digital signatures

Editing a digitally signed PDF affects the validity of the signature. Signed files are also detected by the risk levels and are processed only after you confirm.

Pages with unapplied redaction marks

To avoid applying existing marks along with your changes, the software refuses to process these pages. Apply or remove the marks in the original editor first.

Try it first with your own file

After downloading, open a scan, enter a keyword and click "Find". Finding, replacing and saving need no network connection.
